iPad 4 Using GPU PowerVR SGX 554 Quad Core

iPad 4

Apple claims that their iPad 4 is  two times faster than the iPad 3 due to new A6X chips that are 30 percent larger than the A6 chip in the iPhone 5. To illustrate the difference, score GFlops for iPad 4 at 300MHz clock to 76.8 while the iPad 3 reached 38.4.

So what Apple is doing with the extra space that they add to the A6 so it becomes A6X on the iPad 4? Apparently they add additional graphics processing cores so that now there are 4 cores on the chip. A6 chip itself has 3 chip. For its own CPU on A6X remain in A6 size, and of course the GPU is larger because of the additional new cores. When viewed through a microscope, the four GPU cores are each divided into 9 sub-core.

One analyst stated that it aims to better parallel processing, or for a faster clock speed. But he clearly states that the speed of the iPad 4 is graphically superior to its predecessor due to the GPU PowerVR SGX 554  inside A6X. This chip also doubles the SDRAM interface on the A6.
